Our Trip to Washington

Aimee and Taryn took a little adventure this past weekend to Washington to interview at Our Savior's Lutheran church in Tacoma. It was a little scary taking an eight week old on an airplane but Taryn did amazing. Aimee was really nervous but the Lord put the right people in the right places to help get them through the rough patches.

When they were heading to the security check point at the Salt Lake airport there was a special line for flyers with children. They got to pass by everyone else and go straight to the front of the line. Aimee had just about everything in her backpack so she could get through as quickly as possible but once she got up to the archway they started yelling at her to take the baby out! Aimee had to unbuckle and take Taryn out, pull out the carseat and then fold up the stroller and put it all on the conveyor belt. This would not have been so hard except holding Taryn made Aimee one handed. The nice lady that worked at the airport tried to help but she didn't know how to break it all down. Meanwhile Aimee was holding up the line that she had just budged in front of! Finally the nice lady behind her offered to hold Taryn which allowed Aimee to quickly fold everything up and get it on the belt! After having a little breakdown while waiting for the plane Taryn drifted off to sleep. She woke up long enough to eat and coo at the passengers around us! She was a hit and at one point she was surrounded by onlookers who ohhed and ahhed over her.

The rest of the visit was okay. Aimee met the DCE and his family as well as the pastor and other church members. Aimee felt the interview went fine but did not feel like the Holy Spirit was leading her to this church. The weather was dreary but the people were nice. It was a good experience but in the end she did not get the call. In fact this church decided not to call a DCE at all but hire a part-time youth person instead.

It rained the whole time Aimee was there. One of the events she was asked to attend was paintball with the youth. Aimee imagined it would be at some building and they would hide behind some plastic walls and she would sit and watch on the bleachers...oh no! This place was in the middle of the woods. There were all kinds of people playing and not just the church group. These people were serious paintballers with their camo and their paintball holders around their waste. It was no wonder Aimee got some pretty strange looks when she showed up with a baby in a carseat! There were no bleachers and it was nearly impossible to see or interact with the youth at all. She tried but eventually excused herself from the mud and the rain and went back to her warm hotel.

On the plane ride home Aimee and Taryn sat next to a lady that was returning home after being gone for three months. She had gone on an Alaskan cruise and than stayed with her daughter and grandchildren in Seattle. She went on the cruise with several girlfriends but the trip was originally planned for her and her husband for their 40th wedding anniversary. Her husband was diagnosed with cancer though and died last February. She talked with Aimee the whole ride about her husband and her family and how hard it was to leave her daughter and grandkids. Near the end of the flight Aimee asked her to hold Taryn for her so she could get her bag packed up. The woman told Aimee that this was the best flight she had ever been on. After landing in Salt Lake the woman had to jump on two more flights before arriving home to Baltimore the following day. It was one of those special moments that Aimee will never forget.

These are just a few shots of Taryn at the hotel.
